Perving at Work

An unexpected invitation to dinner. A compliment that goes uncomfortably beyond “you look nice”. A wink. A leer. A grope. For decades, such acts have been the classic calling cards of the now fading institution, the office lech.

At least, I assumed the office lech was a fading institution, until I wrote something about networking and received a message from a reader suggesting that women were disadvantaged at business events because they were forever being leered at (“I can’t tell you the number of times people assumed that, because I had been friendly, it was OK to ask me out on a date”). I discussed the subject with female acquaintances and was informed that lechery remains rampant.
